An Australian guide to flat panel televisions and displays.

Looking for information on various brands and models of plasma screens and plasma televisions? We hope we can help.

We list most major brands. If you are the importer or manufacturer of Plasma Screens and wish to have your products listed or information on your products updated or changed please contact us.

There are basically two types of Plasma Screens; Plasma Televisions which include a built in tuner (analogue or digital) and Plasma Displays which are mainly commercial models with no tv tuner. Obviously the preference for home use would be a plasma television with a built in digital tuner (high definition where appropriate).

HIGH DEFINITION DIGITAL TELEVISION
What is it? Well basically Australian broadcasters are currently using three different levels of high definition:

– 1440 active pixels x 1080 lines @ 50Hz interlaced
- 1280 active pixels x 720 lines @ 50Hz progressive
– 720 active pixels x 576 lines @ 50Hz progressive

The majority of content in HDTV is 720p. Thus to get the most out of HDTV you need a screen of 1280 x 720 pixels or more to reduce the amount of interpolation that the internal video scaler has to cope with.

This is the European definition of a "HD Ready" television: "The European Consumer Electronics Industry (EICTA) Labeling Code specifies that HD Ready screens are those screens that can display a minimum of 720 lines down x 1280 pixels across in the 16:9 aspect ratio."##  Thus if your retailer is saying HDTV ready or compatible and the pixel count is less than 1280 x 720 you may wish to question them or shop somewhere else. (n.b. this code has not yet been adopted by Australian retailers, wonder why?).

STANDARD DEFINITION DIGITAL TELEVISION
What is Standard Definition? The Standard Definition picture resolution in Australia is 576 lines x 720 active pixels @ 50Hz interlaced (576i). In the USA it is 480 lines x 720 active pixels thus the designation of 852 x 480 pixel count screens as "Standard Definition Screen".

PLASMA SCREEN PIXEL COUNTS
Most plasma screens and televisions use the following pixel counts:
42" (106cm) - 852 x 480, 1024 x 768, 1024 x 1024 (ALIS), 1280 x 768, 1024 x 1080
43" (109cm) - 1024 x 768
46" (117cm) - 853 x 480, 1024 x 768
50" (127cm) - 1024 x 1024, 1280 x 720, 1280 x 768, 1365 x 768, 1920 x 1080
55" (140cm) - 1024 x 1024, 1365 x 768
60" (152cm) - 1365 x 768
61" (155cm) - 1366 x 768
63" (160cm) - 1280 x 768, 1366 x 768
65" (165cm) - 1365 x 768, 1920 x 1080
103" (262cm) - 1920 x 1080

BUT pixel count is not everything, in fact it is just the beginning. The video scaler, various computer chips, de-interlacer, various electronics etc. etc. make the picture as well. Many people get caught up in pixel count and contrast ratios and brightness figures when a really good image on the screen is a mix of all of the above!!

The best advice this website can give is to go with a recognised major brand with good warranty and after sales service.
